Dissidenten aller Laender vereinigt

Australia, xs4all) recherchiert.

I learned a few more things.

DFN was established by Howard Jonas, the founder and CEO of IDT
Corporation (www.idt.net). Who is also the main provider of funding. IDT
made
125,703,766 us$ in revenues in 1997 and 5M$ in profits. Here is a little
promo from their website:

"At age 33, IDT's founder and CEO Howard Jonas discovered a way to supply
the world with a U.S. dial tone and cheap international long distance
rates. His tiny International Discount Telecommunications Corp. pioneered
what is now a $1.3 billion dollar a year industry -- international
"call-back" telephone service. This technology allows anyone around the
world to bypass the high costs of placing international calls from
countries outside of the US. Callback gives the caller the ability to make
the international call as if he/she was calling from the U.S.; thus the
lower rates apply. Today, IDT offers domestic and international telephone
service to customers in over 225 countries worldwide."

They say that "DFN tracks down censored materials from around the world.
In
addition, it works with free speech and human rights organizations to
publish banned material on its Web site. "

And these are the criteria for censored pages that may be published by
them:

"What types of censored material will be posted on the Web site?

-Items that have been or are being banned or restricted;
-Items whose publication led to human rights violations against the author
(e.g.,letters from prison written by a person jailed for peacefully
criticizing a governmentis human rights policy);
-Items that, although not officially banned, would be banned or restricted
if they were publicized or published;
-Firsthand accounts that detail human rights violations (e.g., an article
about a jail where political prisoners are held, written by someone who
visited the jail); Primary documents related to censorship, such as laws
or
court cases limiting free expression. "

and:

"DFN will not publish pornographic or terrorist material. DFN believes
that
an individualis freedom of expression should be limited only when it
endangers the rights or freedoms of others.

DFN accepts the restrictions on expression spelled out in Article 29 in
the
Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which the General Assembly of the
United Nations adopted in 1948. Article 29 states, In the exercise of his
rights and freedoms, everyone shall be subject only to such limitations as
are determined by law solely for the purpose of securing due recognition
and respect for the rights and freedoms of others and of meeting the just
requirements of morality, public order and the general welfare in a
democratic society."

It'd be interesting to see how DFN distinguishes between terrorists and
dissidents.
