Menschenjagd: Biometrics bei Britanniens Polizei

Das fortgeschrittenste aller automatischen Identfikationssysteme für
Fingerabdrücke ist im UK ans Netz gegangen. 8 Millionen Menschen sind
damit anhand ihrer Körper/Daten erfasst & registriert. Sobald die
Biometrie, als ultima ratio der Verbrechensbekämpfung, ins wirkliche Leben
vorgedrungen ist (see follow up mail), wird man ihre Bewegungen in near/on
Echtzeit kontrollieren können.

Nottingham Police First to Use New United Kingdom National Fingerprint
Identification System

NOTTINGHAM, United Kingdom--(BUSINESS WIRE/NEWSdesk)--May 15,
1998--The
Nottinghamshire Police is the first police force in England and Wales
to go online with the world's most advanced automated fingerprint
identification system, known in the United Kingdom as the National
Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFIS).

Designed and installed by TRW Inc. (NYSE:TRW) under contract to the
United Kingdom's Police Information Technology Organization, this
unique
information technology system will eventually link all 43 police
forces
in England and Wales to a database of up to 6 million 10-print sets
and
2 million latent crime scene prints.

NAFIS, the world's first system to integrate automated fingerprint
technology and criminal justice records at a national level, is
scheduled to be operational with all forces by the year 2001.
Nottinghamshire Police is the first of nine forces to pilot the
system.

The other forces include the Metropolitan Police, City of London,
Sussex, Hertfordshire, South Yorkshire, Avon & Somerset, South Wales,
and Staffordshire. All the pilot forces will be online within the next
several months. In the near future, the capability to capture
fingerprints electronically will be available from NAFIS.

Operators will be able to scan 10-print sets and crime scene latent
prints into the system, which will then search the national database
and
produce a list of possible matches -- giving the police forces of
England and Wales a powerful crime-fighting tool for the 21st century.

"We believe NAFIS is the most advanced system of its kind to become
operational," said Grady Wright, vice president and deputy general
manager, TRW Systems & Information Technology Group, Public Sector.
"It
will improve productivity and provide a powerful integrated set of
tools
for solving crime."

TRW's approach uses a modular, scaleable solution of commercial
off-the-
shelf products, delivering a system with the flexibility to support
future growth and technology insertion. This will ensure that the
needs
of the police forces will be met well into the 21st century.

TRW provides advanced technology products and services for the
automotive, space and defense, and information technology markets
worldwide. The company's sales in 1997 were approximately $12 billion
(including the recent BDM acquisition). The company's news releases
are
available through TRW's corporate Web site (http://www.trw.com/).
