AtHome Corp. [NASDAQ:ATHM] is on the verge of announcing a deal with search engine and portal site Excite Inc. [NASDAQ:XCIT], according to reports in both the Wall Street Journal and New York Times. The latter reports the companies are due to announce the deal before the market opens on Tuesday morning. The deal, which is valued at around $6 billion, will see Excite shareholders receiving new shares in AtHome representing around 30 percent of the company. The new company will keep the AtHome name and Excite chief executive George Bell will take a board position, reported the New York Times. In recent weeks, Excite had been eyed by several companies including Microsoft Corp. [NASDAQ:MSFT] and Yahoo! Corp. [NASDAQ:YHOO], according to the reports. Excite stock closed Friday $67.50, up $2.375 but sharply lower than its 52-week high recorded last week of $95.00. Shares in AtHome ended Friday down $0.625 at $102, off a 52-week high of $126.75 also reached last week. Excite was formed in 1994 and has expanded from a search- engine only operation into a full Web portal though partnerships with other online companies and acquisitions that have included WebCrawler and Classifieds2000.
