wurde nunmehr in Japan aktenkundig: Zuviele Informationen

December 15, 1998 (TOKYO) About 30 percent of drivers
using car navigation systems believe that the devices are
potentially dangerous, according to the Transport Ministry.

The ministry's announcement is based on results of a recent
survey. Japan's car navigation industry, which is enjoying
brisk growth, was shaken up by the announcement. ...

(1) About 30 percent of drivers who operate a car navigation
system while driving said such devices are "dangerous."

(2) Drivers should look at car navigation screens for no more
than a second to avoid getting into a precarious situation.

The National Police Agency said that of the traffic accidents
in the April through September period, 59 cases involved use
of car navigation systems.

However, this figure is believed to be only the tip of an
iceberg. That's because, according to officials at a casualty
insurance company, admitting to having been looking at a car
navigation screen at the time of an accident would virtually
mean admitting fault.

... The significance of the ministry's announcement is that
for the first time, an official organization pointed out the
inherent dangers of car navigation systems. Such dangers
had not been openly discussed in the public sector. ...
Japan's car navigation market succeeded in spreading the
system with the map method, but the longer time required for
looking at the screen presents a definite problem in terms of
safety.
... Use of DVD devices capable of storing a large volume of
data gave an impetus to the competition, and encouraged
manufacturers to make the screens larger, more colorful and
more entertaining ...
