Airtouch Megadeal: Bell Atlantic wieder vorn

Nachdem allerhand Grosskopferte (Deutsche Telekom,
Tokio genau an jenen Ländern vorbei, in denen Airtouch
starke strategische Beteiligungen hat.

Posted at 6:53 AM PT, Jan 15, 1999 Vodafone Group, the
British mobile phone company that launched a counterbid
against Bell Atlantic for AirTouch Communications last week,
refused to comment Friday on rumors that it has upped its
offer price for the U.S. mobile carrier.
...
While Vodafone has confirmed it is seeking to acquire
AirTouch, it has not announced any details of the offer,
including the intended price. However, most press reports
value the bid at around $55 billion.

Meanwhile, the first bidder for AirTouch, Bell Atlantic, may
have received preliminary indications from the U.S. Securities
and Exchange Commission that the accounting method it
hopes to use to acquire AirTouch is sound, according to a
story in Friday's Wall Street Journal. The company offered
$45 billion in stock for the San Francisco-based cellular
company earlier this month.
...
If it is able to satisfy shareholders, Bell Atlantic is seen by
many observers as having the upper hand over Vodafone,
since the two U.S. companies are already partners in a joint-
venture company called Primeco Personal Communications.
Other suitors have shown interest in AirTouch, including
British Telecommunications and MCI WorldCom, which has
since backed out of the ring.
