LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Z Company, parent of the controversial
music Web site MP3.com, has attracted an $11 million investment
from venture capital groups Sequoia Capital and idealab!, a
spokesman for MP3.com said Friday

Under a deal expected to be formally announced on Monday, Z
Company will change its name to MP3.com Inc., look to boost its

companies have argued the MP3 format, which is not confined to the
MP3.com Web site, is used to make pirated copies of CDs.
...
The spokesman said the company will look to hire talent from the
music industry in order to foster relationships within that domain.

``This should send shock waves through the music industry, who still
think of MP3 as a hobby movement,'' MP3.com Chief Executive
Michael Robertson said Friday in an e-mail message.
...
Last month, major music companies and technology firms formed a
coalition to create a standard by late 1999 to ensure that royalties
are paid for music delivered online.
